Year 5 students at Pigeon Mountain Primary School are establishing a garden specifically to attract New Zealand native butterflies as there are currently very few native butterflies in the Howick/Pakuranga area due to habitat destruction. The most commonly sighted are the monarch butterflies and their numbers are reducing due to wasps. The garden will be sited next to native bush which will provide extra food and habitat for the butterflies.
Students are also sharing their learnings about the defferent variteties of native butterflies that once lived in the area and therefore the gardens will act as an educational resource to students, teachers and other people from the wider community to visit and learn how to provide suitable habitats in their own gardens.
